A few birds ahead of 48 hours of rain for the Bank Holiday

Sunday 26th August 2014

Back garden in Much Wenlock - 2 nets.

1 Blackcap, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Bullfinch, 2 Great Tit ( one juvenile with curved deformity of upper mandible and half length lower , but in good condition generally ), 3 Robin ( adult and 2 juvenile ), 2 Dunnock, 10 Blue Tit ( including a 3J ringed as pullus on Wenlock Edge in area of feeding station ).

Other birds about : lots of House Martin, a few Swallow, Peregrine heard, Buzzard, juvenile Blackbirds eating Rowan and Elderberry

And then it rained !

CES 11 - lots of Chiffchaff and Reed Warbler

Tuesday 19th August 2014:

After several days of windy weather, calm enough to set nets. Back in the dark again at 5am, distinct autumnal chill in the air, Dave, Linda and I.
Session started well, but wind got up, and with sun on nets too, slowed to a trickle in last two hours.

Birds caught:
Chiffchaff 21, Reed Warbler 9, Whitethroat 2, Dunnock 1, Wren 3, Blackcap 1, Willow Warbler 1, Blue Tit 2, Sedge Warbler 1, Reed Bunting 2, Bullfinch 1, Long-tailed Tit 1

Total 45

Other birds seen : Little Egret, Common Sandpiper, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, Greenshank, Buzzard, Green Woodpecker

More Hirundines about, but elusive in terms of netting

Thursday 7th August 2014:

Dave, Stuart, Linda. 4 nets set, and good numbers in the air on a promising warm evening. Few came down to the nets, though good numbers of other Warblers made it very worthwhile. Many of the young Reed Warblers putting on fat quite markedly.

CES 10 : rather a poor catch , probably weather-related

Sunday 3rd August 2014:
Dave, Joe, Stuart and George. After a promising start, the breeze came up a little stronger than forecast and almost certainly caused the lowest catch of the season so far :

Sedge Warbler 1 ( 1 ), Reed Warbler 3, Chiffchaff 2, Wren 1 ( 1 ), Long-tailed Tit  3 ( 1 ), Willow Warbler 1 ( 1 ), Dunnock ( 1 ), Blackbird 2, Lesser Whitethroat 1, Blackcap 1, Whitethroat 2, Robin ( 1 )
So just 23 birds in total.

Joe opened additional nets over Baxter's and caught 10 Reed Warbler, 5 Willow Warbler, 1 Sedge Warbler

Also seen: a flock of about 30 Lapwing, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Water Rail, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Buzzard, Reed Bunting

First Hirundine Roost catch of the autumn - over Baxter's
